HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 Review: Gaming Laptop with Powerful Specs If you want to get the most out of your games, the HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 will make you feel like you’re really playing high-level games with its sleek appearance and AMD Ryzen 5 processing power.

HP’s Pavilion 15 is a midrange laptop that features powerful AMD Ryzen 5 performance in a portable design. It has an excellent keyboard and display, but battery life could be better. The Pavilion is well-built, but it isn’t quite on par with more-expensive premium gaming laptops like MSI’s GS65 Stealth Thin or Alienware’s m15. This HP notebook is still a good pick for anyone who needs decent gaming performance and doesn’t mind giving up some portability to get it.

This laptop provides high-end graphics and excellent multitasking performance without sacrificing portability and battery life.

Building your own gaming PC can be fun, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. If you want to game in the privacy of your own home, but don’t want to deal with the intricacies of building a PC from scratch, then HP might have the solution with its Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 gaming laptop.

If you’re looking for an affordable laptop that can handle your gaming and daily needs, the HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 might be just what you need. It has 8GB of memory and AMD Ryzen 5 quad-core processor.

The display on this laptop is the same size as most other laptops at 15 inches but its resolution makes it much sharper than the norm at 1920 x 1080 pixels. This hp gaming laptop 16gb ram DDR4 and 512 SSD of storage, it’s hard to argue that this isn’t one of the best budget gaming laptops available.

Here are some other features that make this laptop great for gamers of all levels.

HP Pavilion 15.6-inch has a FHD (1920 x 1080) display, micro-edge, anti-glare, 250 nits, 45% NTSC and is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U 2.10GHz 6-Core Processor up to 4.0 GHz max boost clock. The graphics card used is AMD Radeon Graphics.

This is a hp gaming laptop (16gb ram) and 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive storage. In this review, we will discuss specifically the HP Pavilion 15 laptop that uses the AMD Ryzen 5 processor, especially in the case design, processor performance, Display, Performance, Storage Devices, Graphics, Gaming Performance, Battery Runtime, cooling and Connectivity.

HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 has a few changes compared to the previous model, the appearance now looks more modern and the design is slim on the edges.

HP Pavilion 15 Case Modern Design

HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 has a new and modern design without borders, resulting in a fresh and trendy overall look. The micro-edge screen design provides a narrower view of the lateral screen frame.

HP Pavilion 15 Case Design

The keyboard as a whole is housed in a recess in the base about two millimeters deep, and the speaker grille is embossed in a checkerboard design. The sides of the case are punched inwards, giving the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 a modern feel.

The materials used, such as sandblasted, eloxed metal on the back and base, reinforce the shape stability of the HP Pavilion Gaming 15, but not as much as they did for the 14-inch Pavilion. The base of our 15-inch device can be pushed in and is not as torque-resistant as the base of the smaller models. A creaking sound can only be heard at the bottom of the case because it is made of plastic. Fingerprints have almost no chance.

In particular, the display hinges are designed to lift the entire base assembly when opened, while the base slides back slightly. This may seem like a construction flaw at first glance, but it actually has an ergonomic reason as the keyboard is placed at an angle then. However, the opening angle of about 130° is a side effect of this construction design that may not be fully thought through.

hp pavilion laptop 15.6 full hd display amd ryzen 5

HP Pavilion 15.6 Ryzen 5 has a size of 14.11 x 9.53 x 0.78 inches, the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 Ryzen 5 is quite good compared to other rivals. HP also managed to cut weight to 3.75 lbs, making the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 Ryzen 5 the lightest 15-inch device in comparison to other brands. HP’s included 45 watt power supply is very small and light.

The placement of the ports on the HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 was carefully thought out by the developers, so there shouldn’t be any space issues even during full usage.

An HDMI 1.4 port can be found on the right side, followed by a SuperSpeed USB Type-C port, a Multi-format SD media card reader, and a 3.5mm Headphone/Mic Combo Jack.

While the left side of the HP Pavilion 15.6 Ryzen 5 laptop accommodates the Ac Smart Pin / charger connector, and there are 2 SuperSpeed USB Type-A ports.

Connectivity / Communication

The network card used on the hp pavilion 15.6 ryzen 5 is a Realtek RTL8822CE, in our tests with the Linksys EA8500 reference router it was far below the average of all the multimedia laptops we tested. We receive data at a speed of 280 Mb/s and transmit it at 269 Mb/s, which is in line with other Pavilions. At least we also have the option to connect to the network directly via an Ethernet port and a network cable.

SD Card

The SD card barely protrudes from the hp pavilion gaming 15 ryzen 5 card reader, as it is equipped with a spring. However, this is the only good news because at under 40 MB/s the speed with our reference card Toshiba Exceria Pro SDXC 64 GB UHS-II in the JPG copy test and in the sequential read test was well below the multimedia laptop average.

The HP Pavilion 15.6 Ryzen 5 has a touchpad measuring 11.5 x 6 centimeters, the touchpad is wider than usual. Reacts well to input and movement, even at corners and at the edges. The touchpad doesn’t have its own buttons, instead it functions as a ClickPad in the bottom area. Clicks done this way are clean, but slightly less sharp than the smaller 14-inch Pavilion.

The keys of the chiclet keyboard have sharp feedback and the surface feels when typing is rather smooth and flat. Fast, frequent writers won’t have a problem with this keyboard, as the square keys are short spaced and reasonably sized with an edge length of 15 millimeters. The white backlight of the hp pavilion 15.6 ryzen 5 can be turned on and off via the F5 key, but no in-between levels are available. The silver keys with white backlit letters have less than optimal legibility in certain lighting conditions, but HP gave design priority in this case.

The HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 is equipped with an IPS panel by the manufacturer AU Optronics (AUO23ED). This 15.6-inch Full HD panel with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels has a weakness, namely its very low brightness. Using our test station, we measured a maximum brightness of 186 cd/m² in the center of the screen and an average brightness of 180 cd/m², with a brightness distribution of 88%. A direct comparison with the HP Pavilion 14 shows that the smaller model has significantly higher brightness while achieving at least the same score in almost all other areas.

The only commendable feature of this display is its excellent black level of 0.15 and 1240:1 contrast. The Delta-E (ColorChecker) deviation is rather high at 5.94 and 4.44 for the grayscale. Even calibration is not capable of increasing these values. Color space coverage of just 35% for AdobeRGB and 55% for sRGB puts Pavilion at the back of our field of comparison.

Readability in direct sunlight was better than we assumed, even though the maximum brightness was low at 186 cd/m². This AU Optronics display is much better suited for outdoor use than the BOE panels installed in the HP Pavilion 14, which has a case identical in construction to the Pavilion 15.

The device we tested was the HP Pavilion 15 AMD Ryzen 5 5500U, powered by the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U 2.10GHz 6-Core Processor (11MB Cache, up to 4.00GHz). Graphics are processed by the AMD Radeon Graphics integrated graphics unit. A 16GB DDR4 SDRAM module is installed in this laptop, theoretically it can be increased up to 32 GB.

Installed storage is a 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive. In our benchmarks, we wanted to compare the AMD Ryzen 5 processor head-on to the Intel i5-8250U, which should be a great match for this AMD CPU.

There are very few laptops with AMD processors on the market. The announcement of the mobile AMD Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processors about a year ago raised two big questions: How do AMD CPUs and onboard graphics units cost compared to Intel, and how high is the power consumption, in terms of temperature emissions under load? This is the same question we will investigate in the following test.

Performance data puts the AMD Ryzen 5 5500u on par with the Intel Core i5-1135G7. It also has 4 cores and a clock speed of up to 4.0 GHz. Laptop manufacturers can configure TDP in the 12 to 25 watt range, which makes them suitable for Ultrabooks as well. Just like Intel, Ryzen 5 is equipped with an AMD Radeon Graphics integrated graphics unit. Since our HP Pavilion 15 AMD Ryzen 5 5500U doesn’t have a dedicated graphics card, we’ll be testing the performance of the Vega 8 right away in the gaming section.

The HP Pavilion 15 AMD Ryzen 5 5500U wasn’t particularly convincing in Cinebench’s Single 64Bit CPU test, still highlighting the back of the group. The HP Envy x360 and Acer Swift 3, both also powered by the AMD Ryzen 5 5500u, show the possibilities. Pavilion was able to improve slightly in the Multi 64Bit test, leaving behind some Intel Core i5-1135G7.

We ran the Multi Cinebench test 50 times in one loop to determine how strong the throttle of the hp pavilion 15 ryzen 5 from the comparison model list was, but the laptop had rather strong throttling behavior in the first two loops, which the HP Pavilion 15 also demonstrated. It scored 600 points in the first iteration, 571 in the second, and then dropped slightly to 431 points thereafter. This equates to a 38% slowdown!

The HWINfo graph shows clearly that we got a TDP performance of around 12 watts in the first two iterations. After that, the TDP dropped to around 7 watts and the clock speed dropped to 1.86 GHz. Meanwhile, the temperature remained relatively constant at 67 °C.

Graphics Card

AMD Radeon Graphics that processes the graphics in the HP Pavilion 15 AMD Ryzen 5 5500U, the onboard graphics chip integrated into Ryzen 5. It doesn’t have its own graphics memory, which makes it not ideal for gaming. In theory, the performance could be the best compared to the GeForce 940MX.

Our benchmark test results don’t make the Vega 8 on the HP Pavilion look very good. On average all laptops in our database equipped with Vega 8 achieve a reference score of 3126 on 3DMark11. Our Pavilion trailed by 24%, and was down 12% in the 3DMark benchmark test. So we don’t have much hope that Vega 8 is suitable for gaming at all, even at the lowest detail.

The AMD Ryzen 5 5500U installed in the HP Pavilion 15 Gaming, with hp gaming laptop (16gb ram) performed extremely fast according to synthetic benchmark tests, achieving above-average performance scores for Work Score and Home Score on PCMark 8. We scored 4467 points for Work Score, which is 15% above the average of the five comparison models documented in our database at the time of testing, which is also supported by the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U 2.10GHz processor and AMD Radeon Graphics.

Storage Device

The HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 storage device that we reviewed is a PCIe NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive with a capacity of 512 GB. This is a fast storage type for laptops.

Game Performance

As expected, most gamers won’t be happy with AMD Radeon Graphics. Even at the lowest detail at a resolution of 1280×720 pixels, frame rates are terrible. Like the Call of Duty game on the lowest settings it’s at least mostly playable at 29 fps. Users looking to play something more demanding than browser games would be better off avoiding AMD Radeon Graphics.

The hp pavilion gaming 15 ryzen cooling fan does a much better job with cooling than the smaller 14-inch model of identical construction. At a room temperature of 21 °C, we first measure the temperature in standby mode, which amounts to a value between 22 and 24 °C. No matter how much weight we put on the Pavilion in our stress test, the temperature never went above 37.3 °C. This result is remarkable, especially considering that fan noise under full load also never exceeds 36 dB(A).

hp pavilion gaming 15 ryzen 5 supports B&O speakers whose position is located above the keyboard providing moderate sound quality. The B&O speakers reach a maximum volume of 68 dB, which isn’t very loud. You can enable this when watching music videos at full volume while sitting right in front of the laptop without feeling the urge to turn down the volume a little. At this volume, the high notes seem a bit shrill and overly dominant, while the bass is barely noticeable. In addition to the speakers, the Pavilion has a combo 3.5mm audio jack for headphones and microphone.

Noise Emissions

The fan works efficiently, so the hp pavilion gaming 15 ryzen 5 has a constant noise level of 31.4 dB(A) even in standby mode. Subjectively, this fan noise is even more unpleasant than usual, as not only is the air escaping audible but the fan itself is spinning at a slightly higher frequency. His voice was faint, but still audible.

When the hp pavilion gaming 15 ryzen 5 works under load, the fan volume only increases slightly by 2 dB(A). This made the HP Pavilion one of the quieter laptops in our tests. Our HP Pavilion doesn’t show any coil whine either.

HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 Battery Life

HP Pavilion 15 battery life is a laptop that is very efficient in terms of power consumption. No matter whether in idle mode or under load, its power consumption is always lower than the average of other laptops in the same class. The minimum consumption in idle mode is 4.5 watts, while the absolute maximum power consumption we measured was 41.9 watts. HP includes a 45 watt power supply, which should suffice.

If the HP Pavilion 15 Ryzen 5 battery is fully charged, then this laptop will last up to 9.5 Hours. A quick glance at the listing shows that the slightly smaller 14-inch HP Pavilion with the same capacity battery lasts significantly longer in all scenarios. One reason is of course the smaller display and possibly the Intel CPU too.

If you want a gaming laptop that can play today’s latest games at high settings, or if you want something to handle video rendering in 4K, then AMD’s current processors are hard to beat. It’s not just about brute power—AMD also tends to offer much better value than Intel when it comes to bang for your buck. The new HP Pavilion 15 comes with an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for $800. While it may be worth upgrading to an i7 and 16GB RAM, I still think its a great deal for anyone looking for a powerhouse gaming laptop under $1,000.
