Performance Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED RTX 30 Series
Nvidia’s debut of mobile GPUs based on the Ampere architecture, which is the newest generation, may only mean one thing: a flood of laptops replacing and upgrading their graphics performance. The first generation of mobile Ampere – RTX 3060 Laptop (3,840 cores), RTX 3070 Laptop (5,120 cores), and RTX 3080 Laptop (6,144 cores) – is made up of three distinct GPUs, yet there are many more combinations at work than one might expect.
Nvidia is instead providing OEMs with a lot of leeways by producing several variants of each card, allowing the provider to choose one that best meets its TDP and frequency needs. Rather than branding its most energy-efficient components as Max-Q this time around, Nvidia has opted not to do so. According to reports, Nvidia’s official specifications imply that performance from the three new GPUs will vary substantially, and over two dozen unique models are presently available.
TDP ranges from 60W to 115W, with a boost clock range of 1,283MHz to 1,703MHz for the entry-level RTX 3060, according to Nvidia. That begs the question, might an RTX 3070 laptop running at top speed outperform an RTX 3080 laptop that is reined in? Those numbers alone suggest that one RTX 3060 laptop may be over 30% faster than another. That’s not beyond the realm of comprehension.
Nvidia’s choice to group numerous GPU versions into three classes gives manufacturers more opportunity to discover a good balance, but it does have an obvious disadvantage for customers in that they may be unable to tell how quick their mobile GPU is until they buy it. According to sources, OEMs are being urged to provide complete specifications, but our initial RTX 3000 Series review system, a Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED, arrives without them. There is no certainty that this will occur.

The latest Aero 15 OLED comes in six variants: a 6GB RTX 3060, an 8GB RTX 3070, and an 8GB RTX 3080, according to Gigabyte’s official product page. There is no mention of GPU TDP or clock speed, and prices range from £1,699 to £4,199. The RTX 3080 is set to 105W with a boost clock of 1,245MHz, as seen in the Nvidia Control Panel on our top-end review unit. The RTX 3080, which runs at the bottom of Nvidia’s 1,245MHz to 1,710MHz ladder, is confirmed by GPUs, and performance enthusiasts will notice that this £4,199 laptop comes with it.
The availability of 6,144 Ampere cores ought to ensure a good performance boost, and the accompanying cast isn’t short on power. We’re surprised Gigabyte didn’t choose a 16GB variant of Nvidia’s top mobile GPU. There’s a 64GB dual-channel DDR4-2933 memory and two 1TB M.2 SSDs, as well as an eight-core, 16-thread 10th Gen Intel Core i9 processor. We’d have preferred to have seen an AMD Ryzen 5000 Series alternative in the interim, given that Intel’s 45W 11th Gen Tiger Lake chips aren’t yet available.

Design
The Aero 15 is a tiny and light laptop comparable in size and weight to Apple’s 16in MacBook Pro. While gaming laptop chassis manufacturers have a proclivity to try to make their machines resemble sci-fi spaceships or armor plates, aesthetics draws more from gaming than the sleek elegance of Apple’s device. Just smooth curves and patterned texture surfaces, with no fussy details.
A nice touch is the screen’s raised hinges. They also elevate the screen a little to bring it closer to you, neatly separating what might otherwise appear like a slab of black from the base.
Gigabyte made a few good decisions from a functional standpoint, such as putting the Power button and fingerprint reader away from the keyboard, making it easier to find each time you use the computer (before it becomes muscle memory). It’s unusual to have the fingerprint reader on the trackpad, yet it feels natural.
The Aero 15 OLED YD has an all-black aluminum body, which is designed well. The laptop’s design is distinguished by its blacked-out “Aero” logo on the lid.
The Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED is comparable to the competition in terms of weight (4.4 pounds) and size (14 x 9.8 x 0.8 inches). It’s comparable to the Alienware m15 R4 (5 pounds, 14.2 x 11 x 0.7~0.8 inches) but weighs a little more than the Asus TUF Dash F15 (4.4 pounds, 14.2 x 10 x 0.8 inches).
Display
One of the Aero 15 OLED’s selling points is the Samsung 4K AMOLED screen. Whether you’re working or watching HDR content on Amazon, it adds a lot to your experience. Images and videos have a tremendous level of depth to them. According to Gigabyte, this screen emits 60% less harmful blue light than the regular display, allowing you to sleep better if you’re working or watching TV while sleeping.
For the uninitiated, the gamut is how many distinct hues of color a screen may emit – a wider gamut giving you greater subtle hues for a deeper, richer picture. The Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED RTX 30 Series has surprising or dismal color gamut capabilities (for those who aren’t sure, see here for an explanation). According to Gigabyte, the display can deliver 100% of the DCI-P3 color space, which is true as my DataColor SpyderXElite colorimeter shows. For anyone who uses video or animation, this is a godsend.
The screen, on the other hand, could only transmit 84% of Adobe RGB color space, which is less than what Photoshop, Illustrator, or likewise requires. While this isn’t uncommon, computers with screens that can display 100% Adobe RGB, such as the Dell XPS 15 All in One, are available on the market.
While not as precise as the MacBook Pro 16, the screen is very accurate. The delta-E value is used to quantify how far away the colors produced on a display are from what they should be. Although creatives will generally notice differences more, most people can’t tell the difference between colors with a delta-E of 2. The Aero 15 had an average delta-E of 1.56, which is well within the typical person’s tolerance but not as low as many creative-focussed laptop screens (the MacBook Pro had a 0.72).

Port & Speaker
The Aero 15 OLED features three USB 3, HDMI, and DisplayPort ports, as well as one Thunderbolt 3 port. There is an Ethernet port, which is a plus for anybody who has to move large media files around the network or work directly from network storage. This is unusual for a thin-&-light model.
Keyboard & Trackpad
With GIGABYTE Fusion technology, the AERO keyboard has been updated. Each key press is now even more responsive than it was before, thanks to the keyboard lighting that has never been brighter. The gaming and multimedia experience has just achieved a whole new level, in addition to full macro customization capabilities.
One design feature that screams gaming is the RGB backlit keyboard – but it’s of practical use for creatives too. When you first turn on the Aero 15 OLED, its keyboard pulses a rainbow pattern across it. This would be fantastic for a Pride-themed home studio disco, but for day-to-day, it would be rather distracting.
Thankfully, the Aero OLED 15 ships with Gigabyte’s ControlCentre software that – as well as letting you monitor performance and temperature and other nerdy details – gives you a huge level of control. You can turn off the lights, change to a single color or create your own – for example highlighting your favorite shortcut keys in particular colors.
Typing on the keyboard is comfortable enough and there’s a numeric key set for those who like such things, and the trackpad is of reasonable size – though personally I much prefer the larger trackpad of laptops such as the MacBook Pro.
Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED Battery life
The Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED RTX 30 Series survived for precisely nine and a half hours using our standard battery life test looping a video at 120 nits. This is longer than the Envy (a paltry 3 hours, 40 minutes) and roughly equal to the 16-in MacBook Pro (9 hours, 42 minutes), which has a 4K OLED screen.
Pricing & Availability
Right now, you can get the Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED RTX 3080 Laptop for $2,999 through Amazon. That’s a very good price for the Aero 15 OLED’s specs and performance on par with the $2,715 MacBook Pro 16-inch .
