Design

One of the features of the Dell XPS 15 9570 line of laptops is their compact and attractive design. The design of the 15.6-inch screen that almost overflows, makes the XPS 9570 as compact as a 14-inch machine but only weighs 1.8kg, very convenient for users to carry when going to work, or on business trips.

Screen Display
Like its predecessor, the 9570 is available with a non-touch matte FHD (1920 x 1080) or UHD (3,840 x 2,160) touchscreen panel protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The only difference this year is that the screen is 100 nits brighter than before (400 vs 300 nits). I’d like to see edge glass on a matte screen like the XPS 13 9370 has and a 1080p touch option like the XPS 15 9575 has, but Dell didn’t choose to offer either.
Since there are no other changes to the top assembly except for brightness, the same error caused for the 9550 and 9560 still persists, according to the report. Things to watch out for are uneven lighting, backlighting, and misaligned panels (the latter two are very common on FHD models).
The matte FHD panel in my unit is bright enough, going up to around 390, and has color distribution and is bright. In daily use so far, I’ve generally left it between 20-30%, as the peak brightness combined with the excellent matte finish means it’s always clearly visible. Given my past experience with the XPS 15 (FHD and UHD models), I was very impressed with the overall quality; there is a fairly dim rear light source, namely the lower left and right corners, as well as a little flow throughout the bottom. This panel appears to be almost entirely centered within the frame.
My only gripe with the FHD panel in this unit is that instead of the edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass design that the XPS 13 9370 uses for its FHD and UHD SKUs, the FHD display is still surrounded by a hard plastic rim. Feels and looks good but is relatively easy to scratch or get dirty. I’d also like to see an option for a touch version of the FHD frame like on the 9575.

Keyboard
The broadly and scientifically designed keyboard with moderate pressure creates a smooth and comfortable typing experience when entering text.
The XPS 13 9370 keyboard has a slight improvement over the 9360 through a slightly larger key surface and stronger response, a direct difference between the 9370 and 9570; The 9570’s keys feel a little softer.
The Dell XPS 15 9570 keyboard uses magnets to replace the side rubber pads, making key responses more responsive and accurate than conventional laptops. In addition, the key travel is quite short with wider key spacing.
It’s still a pretty good keyboard, and in my experience better than the competition. It’s definitely better than the late MacBook keyboards and beats the Asus ZenBook’s keyboard, which I found too claustrophobic and hard to hit. The Aero 15’s keyboard may have the best response of the 9570’s competitor, but it’s also out of focus, which is annoying when typing on your lap.

Touchpad
The XPS 15 9750 touchpad is quite impressive with the ability to move very smoothly, interact with high precision.
The touchpad supports all precision gestures natively and works as expected for input on modern flagship devices.
The surface is glass and tracking is good, with my only drawback being that it’s quite easy to accidentally right-click rather than left, and there’s no way to completely get rid of the lag of inactivity forced on the touchpad after pressing a button.
This can be improved by increasing the overall sensitivity to “most sensitive”, but this can lead to unexpected behavior such as excessive cursor movement.
However, the matter was taken to Microsoft’s court, so Dell cannot be blamed for the Redmond company’s neglect and removal of critical Windows features.

Connectivity
Similar to other product lines, Dell XPS 9570 is equipped with connectivity ports to support users’ work and entertainment needs such as headphone jack, USB Type A and C ports, HDMI port, and SD card reader.

Speaker

Webcam
The machine’s webcam is integrated under the display with 720p resolution combined with a Windows Hello compatible infrared sensor. This makes it easier for users to use facial recognition sensors to log into Windows 10.
The resulting image is quite bright and detailed. But the quality is just enough for basic video chat. Colors look good, but the camera has issues with edges and surface textures, which look blurry, even in natural light.
Battery life
Another factor that cannot be overlooked when evaluating a Dell XPS 15 9570 laptop is the battery capacity. The machine is equipped with a sizable battery with a capacity of up to 97WHr that occupies almost the entire bottom area of the machine, enabling it to extend the usage time of basic office tasks to over 20 hours without plugging in.

Using Dell Command Power Manager allows setting for 4 fan profiles, which (in theory) allows users to adjust fan operation to the level they are most comfortable with. The levels include Optimized (balanced), Cool (higher fan speed and CPU throttling), Silent (lower fan speed and CPU throttling) or Super Performance (most freedom with fan speed, CPU should at least throttle).
The fan usually shuts off at idle and light loads, running at a lower level when charging and at the second highest level when gaming. At 5000 rpm, the fans are quite noisy, so unless you use headphones or a powerful speaker system you should limit the FPS to 60 or use V-Sync to avoid excessive noise when playing games.
Security Features
The Dell XPS 15 9570 has a fingerprint sensor built-in in the power button, so you can secure the information and data on your laptop and unlock it quickly and easily.
Noise
Dell XPS 15 9570 when operating in idle mode, the cooling fan usually turns off. This is a plus for this generation of XPS, because the previous generation often made noise even when operating in idle mode. I noticed that compared to the 2017 XPS 15, the system noise has increased significantly. Its predecessor had about 30% louder noise at medium load and 11% more noise at full load.
When running the load for a short time (copying files), the noise level generated by the cooling fan is about 30.3 dB. The maximum noise measured is about 43 dB. In general, the noise generated by the engine is not too uncomfortable even if you are a noise sensitive person.

Temperature
When inactive, the machine’s average surface temperature is around 28.7 degrees Celsius. When walking with heavy loads, the maximum temperature measured is up to 55 degrees Celsius in some areas. This temperature is considered relatively high compared to competitors in the same segment.
Price and Availability
The XPS 15 9570 is available in most countries direct from Dell, although standby times and configuration options vary by region. One suggestion: if you can’t find the configuration you want, try looking at XPS in the software for work, instead of the definition for home on Dell’s website and you may find there are plenty of configuration options.
