Dell has been releasing the XPS 15 for years with the same design, and that hasn’t changed much in 2019. The XPS 15 7590 brings a few upgrades especially the 4K multi-touch OLED display. Includes performance fixes, camera placement and the latest NVIDIA graphics cards for a faster and more productive experience.

Overall, the Dell XPS 15 7590 seems to have everything I want. Intel Core i9 octa-core processor is faster than my current desktop, 15-inch 4K OLED panel bright enough for outdoor reading. 64GB of RAM for multitasking, 2TB of blazing fast NVMe solid-state storage, and GeForce GTX 1650 graphics that are powerful enough for gaming. All in an aluminum and carbon fiber chassis with Windows Precision.

In terms of design, there are almost no significant changes compared to the previous generation Dell XPS 15 9570. It also uses high-quality aluminum with magnesium alloy in its body.

In addition, the Dell Xps 15 7590 also looks quite sturdy and square. Perhaps this is also a very distinctive design on the Dell XPS series. The outer cover has a silver Dell logo, this is simple but still exudes the luxury of a high-end laptop.

Although the configuration is quite robust, the thickness of the Dell XPS 15 7590 is not as thick as most other 15-inch laptops. this laptop is only about 1.7cm thick and weighs 1.9kg, which is quite impressive for a laptop configured as a gaming laptop or workstation.

What needs to be said here is that the Dell XPS 7590 has listened to user complaints and opinions to move the camera to the top edge of the screen. Making voice calls is much better than the previous model.

In addition, the power button has been seamlessly integrated with one-touch fingerprint like the Dell XPS 9370 series.
The Dell XPS 15 7590 is in direct competition with other leading 15.6-inch Ultrabook including the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 UX580 and HP Specter x360 15.

Design Improvements

Visually, it’s the same chassis that many of us are familiar with. The magnesium-aluminum alloy outer cover and base with the carbon fiber keyboard deck hold up very well despite their launch nearly five years ago.

The most notable change is that the webcam is repositioned along the top edge of the screen instead of below. The Dell XPS 15 7590 had to change the screen a millimeter or two lower to make room for the Camera, but the overall chassis size is identical to that of the XPS 15 9570 or XPS 9560.

Screen

The Dell XPS 15 7590 screen border is made very thin on three sides including the sides and top. In terms of thinness, it may be found on the latest Dell XPS 2022 laptop at this time. However, a small minus of this device is the lower border of the screen which is still quite thick.

Many of the latest laptops today such as the dell Xps 2021 9310 have now thinned the screen border to all four sides. However, this is not a big problem because the elegant hinge makes the thickness of the border also look a little thinner.

The quality of the screen The Dell XPS 15 7590 is equipped with a full HD display on the IPS panel to help you get a viewing angle of more than 170 degrees without changing colors. In addition, this device also uses Anti-Glare technology to help you see outdoors more sharply and clearly.

It can be said that the display experience on the Dell XPS 15 7590 offers good quality even when compared to today’s latest laptops.

You don’t need a good screen up to 4K on a laptop because it’s only 15 inches, so sometimes it doesn’t take full advantage and drains battery life if you don’t use a charger.

Dell XPS 15 (7590) 2019 with 4K OLED Display

OLED screens are becoming one of the best options for 15-inch laptops in 2019. Because Samsung has a lot to offer laptop manufacturers. Thanks to an OLED display, the XPS 15 7590 has 400 nits of brightness and 100% DCI-PC coverage, along with the Infinity Edge micro-bezel design.

The screen also has an excellent anti-glare coating that effectively reduces reflections from indoor light. It works pretty well and is a great intermediary between the actual displays being able to maintain the exact colors on the glossy screen.

While testing the Dell XPS 15 7590 4K OLED Panel. We found brightness peaked at 517 nits higher on the review unit with 100% sRGB and 97% Adobe RGB for color gamut.

White point, eye response, and contrast are all above average. We have to use the 4K Sharp IGZO LCD touch at 500 nits brightness or 4K OLED (non-touch) at 400 nits.
The OLED version is $44 cheaper than the LCD version. Both screens are very pleasing to the eye. While OLED offers a bit more contrast, it also lacks Dell’s Premier Color profile for switching between different modes like cinema, sRGB, and internet.

Dell’s display options are all great, if you want to get the most out of your battery, full HD is the best option. However, the 4K OLED with its near-perfect blacks and phenomenal contrast, is unlikely to make you switch to other options.

Performance

Dell XPS 15 7590 fully caters for high-end Ultrabook laptops that bring new experiences in technology. It is a thin and light enough laptop for easy portability, aimed at users who use high-end graphics tasks and play games.

Processor and Graphics Card

Very impressive CPU performance looks great. Dell 7590 maintains a high Turbo Boost clock speed for a long time with good performance. on XPS 15 9570. Our Dell XPS 15 7590 was able to maintain a higher Turbo Boost clock speed over time for approximately 12% faster performance.

Starting with a choice of CPUs such as i5-9300H, i7-9750H, i9-9980HK along with a choice of ram from 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB hard drives up to 2T. Along with that is the high-end discrete VGA of the NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB for all kinds of games and high-end graphics.

RAM and Storage

The RAM is user-expandable and comes with DDR4 2,666 MHz. Users can configure the XPS 15 with an incredible 64GB RAM.

Apart from Memory, the storage is also expandable, it can be configured from 256GB to 2TB, all of which are high-performance PCIe NVMe.

Our XPS 7590 SKU is equipped with a 1 TB Toshiba XG6 NVMe M.2 drive, which is an upgrade from the Toshiba XG5 as found on one of our last XPS 15 9570 SKUs.

The XG6 SSD offers similar theoretical sequential read speeds to the XG5 (3180 MB/s vs 3000 MB/s) but with much faster sequential write speeds (2960 MB/s vs 2100 MB/s). The results of CDM 5.5 show faster write speeds than the XG5, especially when writing at smaller block sizes.

Keyboard

The XPS keyboard still provides a fairly good typing sensation, of course it can’t be compared to a gaming laptop with mechanical keys, but it gives me a much better feeling than the Macbook Pro, the key travel although still a bit shallow but enough to bring a sense of satisfaction when typing and layout A reasonable rate also makes typing faster and more accurate.

The downside, however, comes from the palm rest around the keyboard: it easily adheres to fingerprints and sweat, leaving this area shiny over time, especially if you have sweaty hands like I would quickly notice the loss of the glossier aesthetic.

Touchpad

It can be said that the trackpad is one of the components I like the most about this laptop, it is large and accurate enough to satisfy those who are familiar with Macbook trackpads like me.

Another plus is that although the surface of the trackpad is almost smooth, it has very few fingerprints or sweat, allowing you to use the trackpad continuously for hours on end without being bothered by the hissing feeling at your fingertips when you use the trackpad.

Connectivity

Dell XPS15 7590 Connectivity Port
Dell XPS15 7590 Connectivity Port

Port

Equipped with almost all of today’s most popular connections, the Dell XPS 15 7590 includes Ports: 1 x Thunderbolt™ 3; 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 1; 1x HDMI2.0; 1 x 3.5 mm headphone jack.

SD Card Reader

Transfer speeds from the built-in SD card reader are some of the fastest in any budget laptop for a UHS-III card reader. Testing a 1GB total image copy from our UHS-II test card took about 6 to 7 seconds compared to 15 seconds on other ultrabooks. This is really great.

WIFI on Dell XPS 15 7590

All current Dell XPS products come as standard with the Killer AX1650x WLAN module for Wi-Fi 6 readiness. Intel will soon be rolling out Wi-Fi 6 to Ultrabooks, so this is just Dell’s way of proving it.

Killer AX1650x is a gaming variant of Intel AX200 which is similar to Killer 1550 which is a gaming variant of Intel 9560.

Note that performance may be faster than what we recorded below as our server setup is currently limited to a 1 Gbps channel. Unless you have a compatible router, don’t expect to fully exploit Wi-Fi 6 speeds. We didn’t experience any connectivity issues as long as we used the test unit.

Webcam

Webcam XPS 15 2019
Webcam XPS 15 2019

The camera has accommodated a slightly larger top bezel. Dell has succeeded in creating a powerful camera that produces wide, clear photos without much distortion. Features are still soft compared to Surface Pro cameras, but Dell’s is better than most laptop cameras.

Fingerprint

When I sign into the device with my fingerprint, the experience of using high-end devices in my opinion is not smooth. It reminds me of the first-generation fingerprint-equipped iPhone: the results are unsatisfactory. I know it’s impossible to compare fingerprints on laptops with cellphones, but at the price of the XPS, the accuracy of fingerprint scanning like this is still not optimal.

Speaker

The exclusive Waves Maxx Audio surround sound technology makes the sound more realistic, every step and emitted sound closer to you, promising you an extraordinary moment of entertainment.

Noise

The cooling solution has remained intact despite the many generations of CPU and GPU over the years. Dell has optimized cooling many times without completely redesigning the chassis.

As a result, the noise and fan behavior is similar to the XPS 15 9570 for better or worse depending on how you can see things. In actual experience, the engine runs very slowly, the noise is almost complete.

One notable observation on our Dell XPS 15 7590 was that the fans would beat faster under higher loads than we experienced on the Core i9 XPS 15 9570. Core temperatures can rise 100 C very quickly so the fans will respond immediately. This is an excellent cooling mechanism.

Putting the system in power saving mode via Dell Power Manager software will prevent the fan from pulsing at high speeds if it’s just word processing or video streaming for a nearly silent system.

Temperature

The surface temperature of our Dell XPS 15 is also lower than the version with the dedicated graphics card. During the stress test, we only measured up to 45°C (113°F) at the point above. With it, you can also put the device on your lap even in this case. After a few minutes, the processor’s power consumption hit 45 watts, with about half of it being used by the iGPU, most always running at 1050 MHz. On the other hand, the processor is still running at a clock speed of 4x 2.3 GHz.

Energy Management

Dell offers an Intel Core i9-9980HK processor (16MB Cache, up to 5.0 GHz, eight cores) with the XPS 15. Dell has released a special firmware for this new 7590 model to help it perform better including gaming. This Dell XPS 15 7590 overview can tell you that the core i9 is very powerful.

Energy Consumption

Models with dedicated graphics cards use significantly more power. However, what you can clearly see in the measurements during idle operation is the significantly lower power consumption of the Full HD display. Even though our 1080p display was high brightness, the 4K panel on the other XPS 15 models used twice as much power as the other. Therefore, those who value battery life as long as possible will be best helped by a 1080p display (regardless of other hardware configurations).

Battery life

Battery life with the Core i9 is surprising in a good way. If you only use the XPS 15 as a laptop – browsing the web, Office and email – you can get up to 7 hours with the screen at 50% brightness. The numbers aren’t great, but for something with a 4K OLED display and quite possibly an overrated Core i9, it’s much better than I expected.

Battery life may vary widely but based on hardware configuration. Opting for a Core i5 with full HD will probably allow you up to 10 hours of use.

Test Result

Dell XPS 15 7590 Performance for Gaming

I was surprised to see that this Dell XPS 15 7590 can play most of the Games. The GeForce GTX 1050 graphics chip on the XPS 15 (2017) can’t fully play high-end games like Borderlands 3 and Mordhau at 1080p resolution. But with the GeForce GTX 1650 of the 2019 Dell XPS 15 7590 model, Borderlands and The Witcher 3 looked smooth at 1080p and only occasionally dropped below 60 frames per second. You can also run more games on this hardware like Overwatch at 4K resolution.

You’ll want another laptop with an RTX 2060 or better if you actually use it for gaming, because the Dell XPS 15 7590 only supports up to GTX 1650. But I still feel comfortable playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider with 1080p resolution and graphics settings. medium, the black color shown by the OLED panel creates a realistic feeling for the game when it comes to dark situations.

Accessories and Warranty

Dell XPS 15 7590 Nothing extra in the box other than the usual documents. A USB to Ethernet adapter or cleaning cloth would be a great addition.

The standard one-year limited warranty applies. As one of the world’s largest OEM and IT service providers, Dell also offers a wider range of warranty coverage than most. Buyers can subscribe for up to 4 years of premium support and 2 years of extended battery service if desired.
